Elevator Commute

Millennials are trading white picket fences for condos in the sky. Green Street Advisors report Americans under 35 have a higher propensity to rent, are getting married and having children later in life, and desire a more flexible urban lifestyle.

Increasingly, millennials are turning toward urban living options in our city’s core — and with good reason. Jami Baker, a Sr. Account Executive at Miami-based Schwartz Media Strategies, is an excellent example of the new millennial urban living trend. She used to live in Boca Raton and commute nearly an hour each way for work. “Now I walk to work, go to the gym, grab drinks with friends and network with colleagues all within a 2-mile radius,” she says. “This was a no-brainer for me. I wanted to live in a condo with luxury amenities that was close to my job, which is right on Brickell. The longest part of my commute is my elevator ride. I couldn’t be happier. I walk everywhere. I rarely have to use my car. I live, work and play all in the same area.” Leslie Pollack, an Attorney at Kruger Kaplan also sees the benefits. “I’ve always been drawn to city life, but even a few years ago, the idea of urban living in Miami seemed like an impossibility,” says the Miami native. She used to live in Coral Gables with a 30-40 minute commute, so the idea of cutting that time down to just a few minutes was an easy decision. “I can always drive my car, but most often I prefer to walk or take the Metromover,” she says. “That way I can drop by for a last-minute meeting or networking event without having to think twice.”
