The 6-piece percussive force at Zone De Bomba includes Latin-Grammy Award Winner José Javier Freire, who’s internationally esteemed for his work with Bacilos and Suénalo. Additionally, Keinny Merchan lends his drum-slapping skills to David Bisbal and Shakira, while Johnny Frías takes the academic route as a PhD candidate in CUNY’s Ethnomusicology Program. Cintia Lovo sings in world-fusion collective Lanzallamas, and Deanette Rivas has recorded backing vocals for Luis Fonsi and Chayanne. This soulful supergroup is directed and arranged by Charley Rivas whose goal is to transform the performance of Bomba into one that’s representative of the Miami musical experience. Locally they’ve performed live on jazz station WDNA 88.9 FM, swayed hips at the Virginia Key Grassroots Festival and rocked the stage at Blackbird Ordinary. Look out for their debut album in November; ZonaDeBomba.com.
