Winning Edge

On a rainy Sunday in Miami, history was made when 19-year-old Jakub Menšík beat his idol Novak Djokovic in just over two hours of play to claim the $1.1 million prize and crystal Butch Buchholz trophy at the Miami Open.

Coming in at No. 54 in the rankings, Menšík is the lowest-ranked player to win the Miami Open, overtaking No. 45 Tom Mayotte, who won the inaugural tournament in 1985. It’s the young Czech’s first title; and would have been Djokovic’s landmark 100th win and, at 37, he would have made him the oldest man to win a Masters title in tennis history. In fact, Menšík was only a year old when Djokovic won his first Miami Open title. The matchup was the largest age gap in Masters 1000 history and the biggest age disparity of any tour-level final since Ken Rosewall (41) defeated Raul Ramirez (22) in the 1976 Jackson (Miss.) World Championship Tennis Final. The 2025 Miami Open drew a record 405,448 attendees; MiamiOpen.com
