A linguist by profession, Pilar Ibarra Vargas built a career teaching Spanish and English long before flowers became her creative outlet. The instinct, though, came earlier: her mother, celebrated Colombian singer Helenita Vargas, filled their home with arrangements crafted from whatever the garden offered, showing that blooms could transform a space without a word being spoken. That lesson stuck. Today, she gathers palm fronds, branches, and seed pods discarded by landscaping crews, along with cuttings from her own garden, and lets the materials dictate each design. “I love giving these forgotten pieces a second life, transforming them into arrangements that are unique, elegant, and full of character,” she says. A pruner lives permanently in her glove compartment, ready for whatever she spots on the road. Her arrangements have appeared at weddings, showers, brunches, memorial gatherings, and charity fundraisers, each one shaped by intuition rather than formula.
