Let It Flow

Although it’s tough to meet quality people, especially at a bar, your odds are much better with the help of bartender Nina Zevallos at Downtown’s Will Call.

Nearly a decade ago, Peruvian native Nina Zevallos came to Miami and has been in love with this city ever since. She’s worked in several eateries and watering-holes throughout the city but says she loves working at Will Call because the venue is doing something very different. “I enjoy live music and I think Miami really needs a spot like this,” she says.
In addition to the live acts, Zevallos boasts that Will Call has an extensive liquor inventory that offers something for just about everybody — from the staples to rare liquors to worldly brews. “Whatever cocktail you desire, we can make it for you,” she says. This almost 24-hour establishment also offers fresh fruits and juices squeezed daily to complement their cocktails.
What’s more, Zevallos loves engaging with patrons and often has to wear many hats, occasionally playing babysitter, psychologist and even matchmaker — at times simultaneously! One of her favorite parts of the job is when a couple arrives during a first-date type situation, and they’re both awkward and nervous, neither sure what to say or how to break the ice. “I immediately try to create a nice environment for them,” she says.
When Zevallos is not slinging drinks or playing love doctor, she’s a dedicated yogi and entrepreneur. In fact, she just launched her own fitness wear company in June, Aktivaz Fitness Wear.
So what’s the best time to go to Will Call to meet new people? Zevallos doesn’t hesitate. “Definitely happy hour on Fridays,” she says. “Everyone’s in a good mood and ready for the weekend, plus the music isn’t excessively loud and the bar isn’t too crowded. It’s the perfect environment to strike up a conversation and make new friends.”
