Mercy Hospital is a part of the community, especially at Mercy Hospital Maternity Services with its generations of service: Many moms delivering today are working with the same nurse or doctor who delivered them decades ago. In fact, several members of the current maternity services leadership were born at the hospital. This state-of-the-art facility believes in the innovative practice of bedside transitioning, where the baby isn’t separated from the mother at birth and is instead placed at the mom’s bedside. This improves bonding, enhances breastfeeding, reduces pain after a C-section and eliminates the increase in blood pressure when a mother is separated from her new child. Stress is further reduced by the beautiful private rooms with breathtaking views of the bay and the attentive staff who soon become members of the patient’s extended family. Additionally, there is a two-hour quiet time set aside for families, uninterrupted by doctors or staff. The facility delivers more than 2,000 babies annually and boasts 24/7 neonatologists and anesthesiologists as well as a nine-bed dedicated Level II neonatal unit. Miami is a multicultural city and every effort is made to cater to specific dietary requirements and other unique requests of patients. Available classes include comprehensive prenatal instruction, discharge classes designed to increase parent confidence, and weekly parent and postpartum support groups.
