All Around

Think about the last time a room made you feel something.

Maybe a foyer that felt welcoming, or a lobby that calmed you. You never choose those feelings. The walls and floors do the work for you. Every building is giving you hints about how to live right now within the spaces you occupy. A long table says “Come sit, there’s room.” A locked gate says “Keep walking.” Nobody argues with these messages, and that’s why they hold so much influence over us. Designers and architects are always talking to people they will never meet through the spaces they create. So what does a builder owe the person who lives there? Mostly one thing: room to be yourself. A space shouldn’t hand you a script. It should let you leave your shoes by the door, cook with gusto, laugh loudly, and change your mind about who you are, and who you want to be. Everything beyond that is just extra. Real impact needs a place to stand first, before inviting you in to sit, put your feet up, and take it all in.
