It’s gotten me to ponder the role of fate and destiny in our lives, and how gumption and inner drive might affect eventual outcomes. Since I don’t have all the answers and philosopy isn’t my forte, I asked a few people what kismet meant to them. Surprisingly, the responses were all over the place. One colleague said “It’s Kermit’s cousin!”; another described it as “Being in the right place at the right time.” For me, it’s realizing, in retrospect, that you’re exactly where you need to be in life, at this very moment, and the fork in the road that got you to where you are was a kismet moment. But what if you would have chosen another path, been elsewhere at another place and time, what if the decision you made to get you to where you are today didn’t happen? Could whatever other choice you made also result in a postive outcome? So after much research and asking around, I’ve come to this conclusion: When someone says “It’s kismet!” they are really telling you that they are happy with the decisions they’ve made in life and excited about what’s to come. And that makes kismet something we should all strive to attain for the rest of our lives.
