Editor’s Memo

When I was younger, way before Spell Check was a staple of writing, I used to be a local Spelling Bee sensation. Year after year, I’d win my elementary school competition and then earn regional titles before totally flopping at the state level against competitors that had way too much time on their hands to study every single word in the dictionary!

Through all those adventures, one word stuck out to me when I first heard it: Gumption. What is the language of origin? Scottish. Part of Speech? “Noun.” May I have the definition? “Initiative; aggressiveness; resourcefulness; courage; spunk.” Can you please use it in a sentence? “With his gumption he’ll make a success of himself.” Hmmmm…
Gumption: G-U-M-P-T-I-O-N

Fortunately for me, it was the last word I’d ever spell in competition. I was eliminated in the next round and moved on to other interests almost immediately. In retrospect, that word changed the trajectory of my entire life. I started writing more and pursuing my creative passion on paper. Today, my new hobby has evolved into an exciting career as an editor. My secret to success? Eight letters: G-U-M-P-T-I-O-N. Who knew all my dreams were only one word away?!
