BAR HUMOR

If you’re looking for a side of hilarity as you sip on your drink of choice, you might want to pay Haran S. Cantor a visit while he’s tending bar. This local boy has a wit-laced solution for just about any conundrum and he’s always ready to spill a joke or two with every pour.

Boasting a nice portfolio of sister venues including Purdy Lounge in Miami Beach and The Bar in Coral Gables, Blackbird Ordinary sports a sophisticated drink list amid Brickell’s illuminated skyscrapers while serving up creative cocktails, hosting live acts and luring an interesting cast of regulars. And if there’s one thing Blackbird and its sisters can be proud of is Haran S. Cantor. He’s a libation wizard. A bonafide bar clown. The zinger king of buzz. Plus, he’s got magical psychic powers. “I can usually predict what someone will order from across the room,” he says. “What a person chooses to drink at a bar is a conclusion drawn directly from who that person is…or at least who he or she wants everyone else to think they are.” But one thing he can’t always foresee is a person’s ordering style. “There’s the whistlers, the finger-snappers, the dude who can’t order a drink until he’s got you in a head lock, the drink whisperers… even the habitual stiffer all come with the job,” he says. And with that, he admits, a sense of humor is an essential tool of the trade. “I like a good laugh more than your Average Joe and I wield a sharp wit off the cuff,” he says. “Making folks smile is medicine for my soul. I’m rotten inside so the abundance of comedic fodder that makes its way to the bar truly sustains me.”
